the last stop in yuma county (2024)

I always find it hard to write.

FILED UNDER: I REALLY LOVED THIS MOVIE

Well, kind of like David Carradine, that’s no way to go out so let me expand on that a little and apologies to any Carradines or members thereof except for Keith who still owes me money WITH INTEREST YOU SON OF A BITCH!

But I do struggle to write or even talk coherently about things I really get into because, as I am fully aware of, I watch a lot of SHIT movies and, as I know, I get flustered talking to people in the medium of language and regularly say stupid things that make no sense like the other day I told this lady to ‘make sure all the alls are aggregations’ which made perfect sense to me in my head but left her wondering probably who the fuck I was in the first place but at least I wasn’t trying to ask her how she was doing and how her components were behaving and thank the heavens that I wasn’t trying to talk about some baby who might be thinking about me and maybe or maybe not crying and taking a shit on my leg. But luckily none of that really takes place in this movie here and I was able to relax and not think about those types of crippling things and really really liked The Last Stop in Yuma County.

So this isn’t a horror movie at all – it’s more like a western I would guess – I think I read some people calling it Noir but I wouldn’t, at least not the way I define noir where a person is generally just trying to do something and someone else comes along and manipulated them into doing something else, usually for devious results. One of my favorite movies is After Dark My Sweet where poor old Collie is just minding his own business and gets manipulated by Rachel Ward and greasy Bruce Dern into kidnapping that kid and nothing turns out right. Kind of like that last time I ever went to that water amusement park here but without the kidnapping.

A guy stops at a gas station out in the desert but the tanks are out so he goes to the diner next door to wait for a refill. This is played by Jim Cummings who I really like and the waitress is Iocelyn Donahue who I < 3 and soon other folks are in the same boat, looking for gas and maybe some coffee or just a someone else’s car or maybe a piece of pie and two of them are bank robbing criminals with a trunk full of stolen money.

I’m not very good at making real simile – I’m just ok at saying things like ‘man this reminds me of that time we stopped at the museum shop thing on I-40 and they had those fucking tarantulas in there and Chris shit himself but we all know it was really me and I’m lying but everything came to a real big halt and then everyone was suddenly dead and I don’t know if it was from the spiders or the toxins from Chris’ ass but there we were among a dozen dead bodies and boy were we gonna get in trouble but luckily we found that rusted out drain cover and slipped down the sewage run off and crawled 200 miles to Dallas where we made it safe and sound even if we’ve now been fugitives in our home state since the early 90s and can’t go home again yeah this movie was like that but it was really kind of Coen-y but without Steve Buscemi or some of the regulars so it was fresh and well acted and well thought out and IT ACTUALLY MADE SENSE WHY THE GUY HAD A ZIPPO THERE LATER THANK YOU WRITERS.

But this one is really good and probably one of my favorite movies of the last few years. I thought the acting was great and the set ups and pace were perfect and hey OMG that’s Barbara Crampton and I appreciated how it ended I liked almost every part of it. If I had to pick nits, I didn’t love the young deputy actor guy but that’s my fault not his of course and I think it’s because he reminds me of my kidney doctor – a young guy who is always posturing and walking around with his “scribe” who is taking notes for him and I think he’s a douche but he’s covered with my insurance and blah blah blah I get it you’re really short uh huh uh I’ll take the jardience leave me alone.

  1. What’s this? A good, modern western with decent reviews? We must have entered some kind of alternative dimension. Oh well, I’ll add it to the list anyway, before the universe figures out its mistake and decides to correct itself.

Also, surprise Barbara Crampton appearance! Yay! Always nice to see her pop up. Even if it often feels a bit random.

  2. Is the last stop on the 3:10 to Yuma, or is that different? Also, are we talking bang bang outlaw western, or more of a drama set in a desert? I’m wary of westerns newer than Tombstone or Ravenous. Quentin Tarantino’s looked awful. Bone Tomahawk is supposed to be good. I just like Sergio Leone films.
